PS1 Experimentation

These projects exist for one reason, experimentation. No brief, no deadlines, no real goal, just unfiltered fun and expression across 3D design, texturing, and animation. A playground for testing techniques, learning, and pushing boundaries. Some experiments are hilarious, others evolved into something unexpectedly beautiful.

UNDERPASS

This render is an experiment in recreating the PS1-era video game aesthetic with a modern composition style. Built entirely in Blender, the scene employs low-poly modelling, carefully applied texture mapping, and atmospheric lighting to replicate the moody feeling of old horror games.

I paired the dark scene with over-exposure and light bloom for a modern fashion editorial style composition. This project was a deep dive into the interesting technical challenges of balancing nostalgia with modern execution.

IN THE NIGHT

In The Night emerged from a late-night creative spark with a friend, pushing boundaries into deliberately hilarious territory.

A dark hotel, a speeding mobility scooter, and a weirdly suitable sound track. This PS1-style animation features a surreal cast of characters and at the end, a complimentary nightgown-clad man.

Weird, unsettling, and comedic, this project was about pushing boundaries and creating something uniquely entertaining.

STREET UNIFORM

As a visual nod to late 90s to present day eshay culture, a subculture both iconic and divisive in Australian history. The original hyper blue TNs, VB cans, and plastic shopping bag are cultural artefacts, captured in a warm, late-afternoon PS1-style render.

This piece is a playful yet thoughtful depiction of a moment in time, blending humor with nostalgia to explore the visual language of Australian street culture.

POLARITY

Polarity explores the contrast between serene and striking visual experiences through PS1-era aesthetics. These renders oppose a peaceful, distant scene with an intense, visceral close-up, examining how perspective transforms emotional response.

This project pushes the boundaries of low-poly modelling and modern photographic techniques, high-contrast lighting, deliberate bloom effects, and stark compositions. By creating tension between the calm, contemplative distance shot and the raw immediacy of the close-up, Polarity is a comment on how we perceive beauty and brutality.

PIGEON

For my first dive into PS1-style design, I created a low-poly pigeon. A frozen bird, a rotating camera, and no deeper meaning, just an experiment in nostalgia.

3D modelling allows you to explores extremes, the bare minimum polygons to maintain form or excessive complexity that pushes the limits of rendering. I prefer the latter.

OBJECTS

Objects is a random collection of a character head, knife, beer bottle, and a stick, rendered in my favorite PS1-style low-poly aesthetics.

There's no deeper meaning, just a focus on simplicity, form, and the nostalgic charm of early 3D design.
