Scarab Serif

A fast typographic experiment stretching the limits of Source Serif 4 made specifically for this site. I manually distorted, condensed, and realigned every letterform, breaking conventional kerning rules and adjusting the em box to match this site's uncompromising aesthetic. The result, a semi-sh*t but intentionally off-kilter serif that embraces technical imperfection. Not a polished product, but an authentic first exploration of typography's breaking points.

SCARAB SERIF

Scarab Serif was built in FontForge in about 2 hours with no experience, no guides, and plenty of guesswork. Kerning pairs were largely overlooked, overshoots were miscalculated, and stretched forms like the letter 'S' or 'C' didn't quite land.

It's imperfect, but it was a crash course in breaking typography and learning the hard way what works and what doesn't.

SCARAB SERIF CONDENSED

Scarab Serif Condensed follows the same unrefined, rushed approach as its sibling. Letters were aggressively squashed and adjusted in further for a more condensed look. Typography rules were still largely ignored, and the result is my favorite of the two, oddly functional for this site, though only at smaller sizes.

This was a fast, unpolished challenge, and a great lesson in why typography is as much art as it is precision.
